Wide sandy beach and seafront buildings in Zandvoort
Zandvoort is a classic Dutch seaside resort on the North Sea coast.
Quick answer

Can you combine Keukenhof and Zandvoort in one day?

Yes. For visitors travelling by car, Zandvoort is an attractive second stop after Keukenhof. A simple plan is flowers first, then the beach, dunes and dinner by the sea. The drive is typically around 35–45 minutes, but traffic can make it longer on sunny weekends, public holidays and major event days.

Why visit Zandvoort after Keukenhof?

Keukenhof and Zandvoort show two completely different Dutch landscapes in the same day. At Keukenhof you walk through carefully designed spring gardens; at Zandvoort you arrive at a broad sandy coastline with dunes, sea views and beach pavilions.

It works especially well in spring because the days are getting longer. After spending the morning or early afternoon among the flowers, you can continue to the coast for a walk, a drink, dinner or sunset.

How far is Zandvoort from Keukenhof?

Zandvoort lies west of Keukenhof on the North Sea coast. By car, the route is roughly 25–30 kilometres depending on the roads used. In normal conditions, allow approximately 35–45 minutes.

Do not plan the connection too tightly. During the tulip season, the roads around Lisse can be busy, while sunny days create extra traffic towards the coast. If you want a relaxed beach visit, leave enough margin in your itinerary.

How do you get to Zandvoort from Keukenhof?

You can travel from Keukenhof to Zandvoort by car or by public transport. Driving is the most straightforward option if you want to combine the flower park, the tulip fields and the coast in one flexible day. Public transport is possible too, but it normally requires a change in Haarlem.

A seat on the KeukenhofBuzz is not guaranteed, trains to the coast can be full, and queues or extra waiting time can occur on sunny weekends, peak tulip days and major event days. Do not plan a tight connection and always check the NS or 9292 journey planner shortly before travelling.

How do you get to Zandvoort from Amsterdam?

The easiest public-transport option from Amsterdam is the train. Direct NS Sprinter trains run from Amsterdam Centraal to Zandvoort aan Zee. The journey takes roughly half an hour, and Zandvoort aan Zee station is only a short walk from the beach and town centre.

1Travel to Amsterdam Centraal
2Take the direct Sprinter to Zandvoort aan Zee
3Walk from the station towards the beach and boulevard

Direct trains are convenient, but they are also popular. NS specifically notes that services to Zandvoort can be busy during the beach season. On very sunny days and special-event weekends, stations and trains can become extremely crowded and longer waiting times may occur.

What is “Amsterdam Beach”?

You may see Zandvoort promoted internationally as part of Amsterdam Beach. This is a tourism name used for the coast near Amsterdam. Zandvoort is not a district of Amsterdam; it is an independent seaside town on the North Sea.

For overseas visitors, the name helps explain how easily a city trip can be combined with the Dutch coast. A wider itinerary can therefore look like Amsterdam → Keukenhof → tulip fields → Zandvoort Beach.

Walking and cycling paths through the dunes near Zandvoort Beach
Behind the beach, Zandvoort opens into a wide dune landscape that is ideal for walking and cycling.

Beach, dunes and nature

Zandvoort is much more than a boulevard and beach clubs. Immediately behind the coastline you find an extensive dune landscape. That makes it an appealing contrast to Keukenhof's formal gardens.

A short walk through the dunes is enough to experience a quieter side of the coast. If you have more time, there are longer walking and cycling routes in the surrounding nature areas.

Sunset in Zandvoort

Zandvoort faces west across the North Sea, so on a clear evening you can watch the sun set over the water. This is one of the best reasons to visit after Keukenhof rather than before it.

During spring, daylight lasts increasingly long into the evening. A beach walk followed by dinner can therefore be a natural end to a full day in the flower region.

Can you swim in the North Sea?

Yes, but the North Sea can be cold, especially during March, April and early May. Always pay attention to local flags, currents, weather conditions and lifeguard instructions. For many Keukenhof-season visitors, a walk along the waterline will be more realistic than a long swim.

Dogs on Zandvoort Beach

Dogs are generally allowed on the beach during the daytime from 1 October to 1 May. Outside that period, different restrictions apply. Because rules can vary by time and beach section, always check the signs at the beach entrance before letting a dog off the lead.

Is Zandvoort good with children?

Yes. After several hours walking around Keukenhof, the beach gives children space to run and play. Families also have many places for food, drinks and toilets along the central beach areas. Children should always be closely supervised near the sea.

How much time do you need in Zandvoort?

For a quick look at the beach, allow around 2 hours. If you want to walk through the dunes, have dinner or wait for sunset, 3–4 hours is much more comfortable.
