Experience Holland in full colour

Long rows of red, yellow, pink and purple flowers stretching across the countryside: visiting the tulip fields is one of the most memorable experiences of spring in the Netherlands. Around Keukenhof, you can enjoy this colourful landscape and visit flower attractions where you are welcome to get closer to the tulips.

De Tulperij, Tulip Experience Amsterdam and The Tulip Barn each offer a different experience, from discovering life on a flower farm to exploring a tulip museum or taking photographs among the blooms.

Can you visit the tulip fields for free?

You can admire many flower fields from public roads and paths without buying a ticket. However, the fields belong to growers and are working farmland. Please stay outside the fields unless the owner specifically welcomes visitors. Walking between the rows can damage plants and spread diseases that affect the bulbs.

For photographs among the flowers, choose a visitor garden or a farm offering paid access. These locations provide designated areas where you can enjoy the tulips while respecting the grower’s work. At De Tulperij, the show garden is free; entering the production field for photographs is a paid experience.

De Tulperij in Voorhout is the family business of Daan and Anja Jansze. It is a lovely place to discover the flowers and the people who grow them.

The free show garden features different varieties of tulips, alongside daffodils and hyacinths. Explore the paths and look closely at the surprising differences in colour, size and flower shape.

To enter the production field for photographs, you need a paid field-access ticket. This gives you approximately 45 minutes among the flowers. A member of staff accompanies visitors to the field and is available for questions about tulip growing.

Groups can also book a separate paid excursion to learn about the journey from bulb to flower. During the picking season, you can create your own bouquet in the designated picking garden and pay for the tulips you pick. Availability depends on flowering conditions.

Make time for coffee and homemade cake in the greenhouse or on the terrace, and browse the shop for souvenirs and local products. Food, drinks and purchases are additional costs when visiting independently.

When is the best time to see the tulip fields?

April generally offers the best chance of seeing colourful tulip fields, with mid-April often a particularly good period. Earlier in spring, daffodils and hyacinths also bring colour to the region.

Flowering depends on the weather and the varieties planted. An attraction’s opening date does not guarantee that every outdoor flower bed will already be in bloom. Check flowering updates shortly before your visit and enjoy the different colours each stage of spring brings.

Read the flowering guide for Keukenhof and the surrounding fields to understand how the season develops. This is seasonal guidance, rather than a live bloom update.
