Why cycle the bulb fields?
The flower region around Keukenhof is one of the easiest and most enjoyable places in the Netherlands to explore by bicycle. The landscape is flat, distances are manageable and many quiet roads and cycle paths run directly between the bulb fields.
The scenery changes throughout spring. Daffodils often appear first, followed by hyacinths and then the large tulip fields that have made the Bollenstreek famous around the world.
The exact fields in bloom change every year and even from week to week. These routes are therefore suggested scenic routes rather than a guarantee that every field along the way will be flowering on the day of your visit.
When can you see the flower fields?
| Flower | Typical period | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Daffodils | Mid-March to mid-April | Yellow and white fields, often among the first strong colours of spring. |
| Hyacinths | Late March to late April | Pink, purple, blue and white fields, often with a strong fragrance. |
| Tulips | Early/mid-April to early May | The largest concentration of classic red, pink, orange, purple, yellow and white fields. |
| Best mixed spring colour | Early to late April | The best chance of seeing several flower types during one ride. |
Weather has a major influence on flowering. A warm spring can bring the season forward, while colder weather may delay it. Growers may also remove the flower heads once the bulb has developed sufficiently, so always check the latest flower report shortly before your ride.
Four suggested cycling routes
Keukenhof & Lisse Flower Fields
Keukenhof → Loosterweg → De Tulperij area → Lisse → Keukenhof
A relaxed route for visitors who want to combine Keukenhof with a short countryside ride. You pass through traditional bulb-growing land around Lisse and can stop near De Tulperij.
Best for: families, casual cyclists and anyone visiting Keukenhof on the same day.
Open Route 1 in Google Maps →Classic Tulip Fields Route
Keukenhof → De Zilk → Noordwijkerhout → Tulip Experience Amsterdam → Lisse → Keukenhof
This longer loop covers a larger part of the Bollenstreek and gives you a better chance of seeing fields at different stages of bloom.
Best for: visitors who want a real flower-region experience with time for photographs and a flower attraction.
Open Route 2 in Google Maps →Tulips, Dunes & Dutch Coast
Keukenhof → Noordwijkerhout → De Zilk → Langevelderslag → Noordwijk → Keukenhof
Combine two classic Dutch landscapes in one day: colourful flower fields and the dunes of the North Sea coast. This route is especially enjoyable on an e-bike.
Best for: confident cyclists, e-bike users and visitors who have most of the day available.
Open Route 3 in Google Maps →Lisse & Hillegom Flower Fields
Keukenhof → Lisse → Hillegom countryside → Beinsdorp → Lisse → Keukenhof
Head north towards Hillegom for quieter countryside and another major bulb-growing area. This route can be combined with The Tulip Barn.
Best for: cyclists who want a less concentrated route away from the busiest Keukenhof roads.
Open Route 4 in Google Maps →Google Maps may adjust the precise route depending on current cycle access, roadworks and your device settings. Always follow local traffic signs and designated cycle paths.
The best time of day to cycle
Early morning, roughly 08:00–10:30, is excellent for quieter roads and softer light. Late afternoon, roughly 16:00–19:00, can also be beautiful and often becomes calmer again after the busiest visitor period.
On sunny April weekends, roads around Keukenhof and Lisse can be much busier around midday. If photography is important to you, morning or late afternoon is usually more relaxed.
Visit flower attractions along the way
If you want to walk among the flowers rather than only view production fields from the roadside, add one of these visitor attractions to your cycling day.
Tulip Experience Amsterdam
Explore the tulip museum and outdoor garden and enjoy the designated visitor experience among the flowers.
De Tulperij
The show garden is free to visit. A paid ticket is required for the special production-field photo visit. Group tours through the bulb fields are offered separately.
The Tulip Barn
A colourful visitor garden with photo spots and tulips in Hillegom. This is an easy stop to combine with the northern flower-fields route.
Guided tulip-fields bike tour
Would you rather explore the Bollenstreek with a guide? Join a guided bike tour through the flower region and discover the landscape while learning more about tulip growing, the bulb industry and the villages around Lisse.
This is a good choice if you do not want to plan your own route or would like local explanation along the way.
Please stay out of production fields
Most bulb fields are private working farmland. Never walk between the rows unless the grower explicitly allows it. Entering a field can damage plants and bulbs and may spread diseases.
Take photographs from the roadside or use a designated visitor attraction such as Tulip Experience Amsterdam, De Tulperij or The Tulip Barn if you want to be surrounded by flowers.
How much time should you allow?
| Ride | Recommended time | Good to combine with |
|---|---|---|
| 10–15 km | 2–3 hours | Keukenhof on the same day |
| Approx. 25 km | 3–5 hours | Tulip Experience or De Tulperij |
| 25–35 km | 3–5 hours | The Tulip Barn / Hillegom |
| 35–40 km | 4–6 hours | Dunes and coast |
If Keukenhof is the main focus of your day, the shortest route is usually the most comfortable choice. For a dedicated cycling day, the 25 km or 35–40 km routes give you more variety.
