What is The Tulip Barn?

The Tulip Barn is a seasonal flower attraction in Hillegom, in the heart of the Dutch Bollenstreek. It was created as a place where visitors can experience tulips up close without entering commercial production fields that are not open to the public.

The visitor garden covers around 30,000 square metres and is planted with approximately 2.5 million tulips in more than 250 varieties. The design changes from year to year, so the patterns, colours and photo backgrounds can be different every spring.

The attraction grew from a graduation project in 2021 and is connected to a fifth-generation bulb-growing family. That farming background makes it a useful stop for travellers who want both the visual experience of a tulip field and a closer connection with the Dutch bulb-growing region.

The Tulip Barn is especially popular with visitors who want photographs surrounded by flowers. The garden has wide visitor paths and dedicated photo locations. Depending on the season's layout, these can include swings, vehicles and other colourful installations.

Important: commercial bulb fields around Hillegom and Lisse are working farmland. Do not enter private fields for photographs. At The Tulip Barn, follow the designated visitor paths so you can enjoy the flowers without damaging growers' crops.

How to get from Keukenhof to The Tulip Barn

The Tulip Barn is approximately 3 kilometres from Keukenhof. The attraction describes the drive as around 10 minutes, although traffic in the Bollenstreek can be much heavier during popular tulip-season days.

This makes the two attractions easy to combine. Keukenhof is best for landscaped gardens, pavilions and flower displays, while The Tulip Barn gives you a more direct field-style experience with visitor paths among the tulips.

How to get from Amsterdam to The Tulip Barn

By car, The Tulip Barn describes its location as approximately 30 minutes from Amsterdam in normal conditions. During the busiest spring weekends, travel can take longer because the roads around Lisse and Hillegom become crowded.

By public transport, travel by train to Hillegom station. From the station it is approximately a 15–20 minute walk to The Tulip Barn, or around five minutes by taxi. Always check your exact route shortly before departure.

Visit The Tulip Barn by bicycle

Cycling is one of the nicest ways to explore the Dutch flower region. The Tulip Barn has free bicycle parking and lies close to popular cycling routes through Hillegom, Lisse, Noordwijkerhout and the surrounding bulb fields.

If you start at Keukenhof, you can combine the attraction with a longer ride through the countryside. Remember that many flower fields are private farmland; enjoy them from public roads and use designated visitor attractions when you want to walk among the flowers.

Food, drinks and the Greenhouse Café

After walking through the flowers, you can stop at the Greenhouse Café or sit on the sunny terrace. The Tulip Barn serves coffee, pastries, refreshing drinks and other food, with additional hot food available from food trucks.

You do not need a tulip-garden admission ticket if you only want to visit the café and terrace area, making The Tulip Barn a useful stop during a cycling route through the region as well.

Is The Tulip Barn good for children?

Yes. The attraction is designed as a family-friendly spring outing. Besides the tulip garden, children can use play facilities such as a farm-themed playground, tractor-racing area and seasonal play activities. Weekend extras can vary.

The family ticket can make the attraction particularly useful for parents who want to combine flower photography with an activity that younger children can enjoy.

What is the best time to visit The Tulip Barn?

The exact bloom changes every year because it depends on the weather. April generally offers a strong chance of colourful displays in the Bollenstreek, but different tulip varieties flower at different times throughout the season.

If photography is your priority, arriving earlier in the day can help you enjoy the garden before the busiest part of the afternoon. Weekdays are generally a better choice if you prefer a quieter visit.
