The Keukenhof windmill dates from 1892

The windmill at Keukenhof is one of the park's most recognisable landmarks. It was built in 1892 and has stood at Keukenhof since 1957, when it was donated by Holland America Line.

Today it provides a classic Dutch backdrop for photographs and also functions as a viewpoint over the gardens and surrounding flower-bulb region.

Can you go inside the Keukenhof windmill?

Yes. The mill is open daily to Keukenhof visitors during the spring season and is free to enter. Visitors can climb inside and reach the viewpoint.

There is no separate admission fee for the mill once you are inside Keukenhof.

What can you see from the windmill?

The elevated viewpoint gives a different perspective from the rest of the park. You can look across parts of Keukenhof and out towards the surrounding flower fields.

The view changes during the season because the agricultural fields around Lisse flower at different times depending on crop and weather conditions.

Where is the windmill?

The windmill is on the eastern side of the park and is clearly marked on the Keukenhof map. It is also close to the departure point for the Whisper Boat.

Because the mill is away from the main entrance, it is useful to include it deliberately in your walking route rather than leaving it until the final few minutes of your visit.

Is the windmill accessible?

The viewpoint inside the mill is not accessible for wheelchairs, rollators or visitors with walking difficulties. The climb involves steps and a historic interior.

The exterior of the windmill can still be enjoyed from the surrounding accessible paths.

Whisper Boat next to the windmill

The Whisper Boat departure point is located behind the mill. The electrically powered boat trip lasts around 45 minutes and travels through the surrounding flower-bulb landscape.

It does not sail through the Keukenhof gardens themselves. Visitors need a valid Keukenhof admission ticket in order to book the Whisper Boat.

How much extra time should you allow?

If you only want to photograph the outside of the windmill, 10–15 minutes may be enough. If you want to climb inside, enjoy the view and take photos, allow around 20–30 minutes depending on how busy it is.

Add at least another 45 minutes plus boarding time if you also plan to take the Whisper Boat.

Best time to visit the mill

The windmill is a popular photo location. If you prefer a quieter experience, visit earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon rather than at the busiest middle part of the day.

Late afternoon can also work well if you are travelling on a Flex Return day trip and do not need to leave at a fixed early time.

Why the mill is useful for orientation

Because of its height and distinctive shape, the windmill is an easy landmark when navigating the eastern side of Keukenhof. It is also a useful meeting point if people in your group split up.

Keukenhof windmill or a real working windmill?

The Keukenhof mill is a historic Dutch windmill and a visitor attraction within the park. If your main interest is seeing several traditional working windmills and learning more about their industrial functions, consider combining Keukenhof with a destination such as Zaanse Schans or a Windmill Cruise through the Kagerplassen.
