A long-established beach pavilion

Strandpaviljoen Sport is one of the best-known places to eat at Wassenaarse Slag. The owners describe a beach pavilion at this location from around 1960, with successive generations turning it into a familiar meeting place for Wassenaar residents and holidaymakers.

As you come over the main beach access and face the North Sea, Sport is on your left. There is a broad, hard-surfaced access route running past the lifeguard station. That makes it different from a beach venue reachable only over loose sand, although the final suitability of the route depends on an individual visitor’s mobility needs and current conditions.

Breakfast, lunch, dinner and the menu

The official website lists breakfast, lunch, drinks and dinner, and says the pavilion caters for guests with allergies, intolerances and coeliac disease where possible. A day here can begin with breakfast by the sea, continue with time on the beach and finish with an evening meal or drink on the terrace.

Menus can include a mix of classic beach-restaurant dishes, fish and seafood, snacks and other choices. Individual items, dietary options and prices can change between seasons. For an up-to-date overview, use the menu page directly or ask the staff about specific allergies.

Important: Sport is a seasonal pavilion

Do not assume Sport is open during the winter. Its official opening-hours page describes a season running roughly from spring to the end of September, after which the pavilion is closed and dismantled for the winter. The exact opening and closing dates can vary from year to year.

The opening-hours page has also displayed daily service from about 09:00 during its operating season, but individual closing times vary by day. Check the current season’s announcement before travelling and confirm whether the kitchen is open at your preferred time.

How to reserve a table

For an ordinary table reservation, Sport asks visitors to telephone the restaurant. Its contact page explains that reservations for groups smaller than 30 people are accepted by phone, while larger party enquiries should be emailed.

A reservation is especially useful for a sunny weekend lunch, a large family celebration or an evening meal. Telephone: +31 (0)70 511 4076. For groups: info@strandpaviljoen-sport.nl.

Beach chairs, umbrellas and a full beach day

The pavilion describes beach beds and parasols as part of its beach-day offering. Their availability, prices, whether advance booking is possible and weather-related restrictions should be checked directly with the venue.

You can enjoy the large sandy beach and then return to Sport for food or a drink without a long walk away from the coast. As with all Dutch North Sea beaches, take notice of lifeguard advice and flag warnings before entering the water.

Groups, barbecues and private occasions

Strandpaviljoen Sport promotes group arrangements for birthdays, company outings, celebrations and private events. The official website mentions barbecues and drinks for larger groups, and separate event arrangements for substantial parties. Because numbers, packages and prices are subject to change, request a tailored proposal from the restaurant.

Families, accessibility and practical questions

Sport has a long association with family beach days. Its hard-surfaced route is a helpful feature compared with approaches that require walking entirely over sand. Nevertheless, the entrance, toilets and terrace arrangements may not meet every accessibility requirement. Ask the venue directly about wheelchair access, accessible toilets, baby-changing facilities or high chairs.

Dog policies can differ between beach restaurants and the public beach. Contact Sport about bringing a dog and consult the beach signs for the seasonal rules.

Address, directions and parking

Wassenaarseslag 29, 2242 PG Wassenaar is at the main Wassenaarse Slag beach access, west of Wassenaar village. The access road crosses the dune landscape, so do not head to the village centre expecting to find the restaurant beside the shops. Follow signs for Wassenaarse Slag and the designated beach parking areas.

The two main paid car parks are De Kuil and Zeelust. Fees and seasonal arrangements may change. The beach guide on TulipHolland.com explains the parking areas and available tariffs. You can also cycle through the dunes to the beach; public transport generally does not stop directly by the sea here.

Combine your restaurant visit with Keukenhof

If you are visiting Keukenhof during the tulip season, Wassenaarse Slag is an appealing addition to a day in the wider South Holland region. Enjoy the flower gardens first, then head towards the coast for a walk along the North Sea and a meal. The beach guide suggests allowing roughly 35–45 minutes by car from the Keukenhof area in normal traffic, but delays are possible on spring weekends.

You can turn the trip into a relaxed coastal itinerary: Keukenhof in the morning, a drive past the Dutch dune landscape, a short beach walk and a restaurant stop near sunset. If you have limited time, check opening hours and reserve where possible before setting off.

Before you go: a practical checklist

  • Check the official opening hours on the day, particularly in winter or poor weather.
  • Review the latest menu and ask the venue directly about food allergies or special diets.
  • Consider reserving a table for weekends, holidays or larger groups.
  • Use designated paid beach parking; never leave your car on dune paths or restricted verges.
  • If accessibility or child facilities matter to you, confirm specific arrangements with the restaurant before travelling.
  • Follow lifeguard guidance and local regulations if you also visit the beach.
